The Passion Week on PowerPoint
In my last online ministry letter I said that I planned, God willing, to be traveling back to Nepal in May. That door did not open. Maybe the door was just sticking and I wasn’t confident that I should try to push it open but in the end I did not go. My prayer is that I can go back to Nepal later this year. As usual, there are obstacles to overcome along the way – spiritual, political, financial.
I don’t like to plan missions in the summer months because the airfare is considerably higher, and so I am back at work in my home office. As long as this door remains open I have a pile of projects I am trying to complete.
One project that I intended for just one Sunday at my church has turned into some way more substantial. On Easter Sunday* I did a PowerPoint presentation on the Passion Week. I wanted to do a simple harmony of the gospels to give people (starting with me) an overall picture of the events of that week.
* (I know that some Christians do not like the word “Easter” on account of its pagan roots. But that argument could be made against ALL the English names for the days of the week and months of the year (for example, Thursday is Thor’s Day). Some languages still call the seventh day the Sabbath (i.e. ‘Sábado’), but in English-speaking countries, the name comes from Saturn’s Day. Anyway, the argument makes me think of 1 Corinthians 5:9-10: I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators: Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.)
Back to my point – after my presentation on Easter Sunday, I felt driven to do a more complete job on the subject and so I started over. Yesterday I presented Part 3 of what will probably be a seven-part series.
I would like to share with you what I’ve done so far. If nothing else it is edifying to look at the illustrations and hear Alexander Scourby read the Bible. My methodology is typical of all my teachings: the scriptures are set forth “line upon line, here a little and there a little”, and I add information that I find helpful and interesting.
I have already done PowerPoint presentations on the book of Acts, Joshua, Ruth, and the nativity story, plus a few stand-alone sermons. But for now I have taken these presentations off the wtwh.org website because I want to redo them. Working with PowerPoint has definitely been a “learn as you go” experience, and on top of that, I have a stubborn streak of perfectionism.
As for this series on the Passion Week, I have put three formats online. I know that not everyone has easy access to the internet and adding audio makes the files pretty big.
The smallest, simplest format is a .pdf file.
Next, a PowerPoint presentation WITHOUT the audio track
The biggest file is a PowerPoint with an audio track.
I would really appreciate your feedback. It has long been my goal to put all of my classes online, but I want to find a format that does not require me to get in front of a camera or record myself speaking. I am thinking this format might be suitable.
